Daytona Beach, FL – June 9, 2011 – Sea Shells Beach Club in Daytona Beach, Florida, hosted its second annual Beach Walk and Cleanup on Earth Day in late April as employees, guests and local residents participated in a beach cleanup near their resort, which is owned and managed by Global Connections, Inc. (GCI). Taking their Go Green initiative seriously, Sea Shells Beach Club was the only Daytona Beach business hosting an Earth Day event.
Angelina Kauffold, General Manager of the 37-unit Sea Shells Beach Club, organized the three-hour event, which started on the beach near the resort's oceanfront entry. Each group was given eco-friendly trash bags and gloves. Along the two-mile round trip area pounds of trash and recyclables were recovered from the beach and sorted into trash, paper products, commingled plastic, aluminum and glass to turn in to the local recycling center.
Following the beach cleanup, the resort provided a cookout to all participants, including members of the Daytona Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau. They also donated a one-night stay at the Sea Shells resort. Six-year old Coral Reese, one of the smallest Earth Day participants, selected the "lottery" name of David Lopez as the vacation winner. Lopez is a Deland, FL native who participated in the cleanup with his girlfriend and daughter, as they wanted to do their part to help keep the beaches clean.
Added Kauffold, "Earth Day was the perfect opportunity to bring environmental awareness to people everywhere and it made sense for us to do our part. With such a great turnout for the second consecutive year, we are already looking forward to hosting the Third Annual Beach Walk and Cleanup next year."
